Great Facebook and YouTube Idea: A Day in the Life

I'm lucky enough to have followed the great social media work of Christian Aniciete at Portland State University for quite some time. Imitation being the highest form of flattery, I have stolen liberally from Christian's work at Portland State, especially stuff that is as cool as this:

The past two years, PSU has picked a day and invited people to capture it in video. Here is some more info on how they solicit and collect the videos.

Once all the raw footage is collected, the team at PSU compiles and edits it into an awesome "One Day at PSU" video that highlights the campus as experienced by the students themselves. What I like best about it is that it is a very powerful way to authentically showcase what happens at the school. It's polished, but it doesn't have that glossy marketing sheen that can so easily be identified as advertising.

Clearly, they were smart about picking a day that has a lot going on, which helps in highlighting the breadth of activities on campus. Definitely something to keep in mind when I get around to stealing this idea.

I saw Christian present the 2012 video at a CASE VIII Conference earlier this year, and it really impressed everyone in attendance. For reals - this is a very cool example of social media use in higher ed.
